My dad was a lobsterman most of his life, and his boat and business were named after me! I have so many wonderful memories on that boat - from hauling traps to swimming, to digging clams and having a cookout of lobsters and steamers on the boat, and just plain old sunset rides after a long day at the beach.
With so many memories, I always knew I wanted my art business to be named "Janel Leigh". And it took a few different types of business and business names before I knew I was "ready" to finally settle on the one thing I loved, and the name I knew I wanted to carry forward and reclaim. As of course, it is my own name!
I did almost actually follow in his footsteps lobstering. When I was in middleschool, the plan was to get me a small boat and a 10 trap license, and see how I liked it. When the time came though, I think he might have realized he wanted more for me than that, and I was told I was getting a job as a bus girl at a fancy restaurant! I don't think I would have loved it as much as he did. I'm a pretty fair weather sailor!
